Mexico's Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc
Cuauhtémoc - The training tall ship Cuauhtemoc was built in the Celaya shipyards (Bilbao, Spain) and was completed in July 29, 1982 when it was delivered to its first crew, the Mexican Navy. Its primary function is to serve as a training ship for officers, cadets and crew of the Mexican Navy. The Cuauhtémoc, known as the Ambassador and Gentleman of the Seas, has trained twenty-one generations of officers and it has sailed 408,853 miles in 3,178 days.

Cuauhtémoc - On the ship’s emblem appears an eagle standing on a rigging rope which encircles a sailing ship. The moon and star motif represent the original method of navigation used by all ships, which the training cadets still have to learn. The depiction of the Aztec god of wind, Ehécatl, who drives the ship to the West and the sunset, influential in the naming of Cuauhtémoc, embroider the edge of the emblem.
Cuauhtémoc: (1520-1524) Son of Ahuitzáotl and nephew to Montezuma and Cuitláhuach. He was the last of the Aztec emperors and reputedly the bravest of them all. He fought courageously, if brutally, against the Spaniards in the defense of the great city of Tenochtitlán.
Cuauhtémoc - The ship gets its name from the last Aztec emperor Cuauhtémoc, which derives its roots from the Nahuatl Cuauhtli, meaning eagle, and Témoc, meaning to come down. The name Cuauhtémoc therefore means ‘eagle which descends over its prey’.
